Whitstable Carnival, August 2006

By chance, I was visiting Mark on the day of the carnival. For the last few years, it's been a rather sorry affair and my hopes weren't high. However, for once it wasn't bad. Not bad at all. There were more decorated floats this year than I can remember for a while, at least. I was so impressed, I took quite a few photos. Thirty-nine, in fact.

Pavement singers
Fire engine
We set ourselves up outside the East Kent and, while we waited, over the road in front of the British Legion, we were entertained by "Elvis" and his backing singers. As usual, the procession was led by the fire brigade, or the Fire and Rescue Service as it is now known.....
Police car
Miss Whitstable
..... followed by the local police. See? They do exist. First of the Carnival queen tableaux was of course Miss Whitstable.

Sea Cadets
Miss Bromley
Directly behind Miss Whitstable was the first marching band, that of TS Vigilant, Whitstable's Sea Cadet unit. Next carnival queen was Miss Bromley.
Hula folk
Kintergarten Kids
Ah; suitably dressed hula girls, representing a local kindergarten. Sorry - I didn't get the name. Oh - it's Kintergarten Kids Ltd, apparently. It always helps to read the labels.

Kintergarten Kids
Kintergarten Kids
This was the Kintergarten Kids float..... .....as was this view.
Kintergarten Kids
Miss Sittingbourne
Tail-ender hula girls..... ..... and Miss Sittingbourne's float.

Miss Sturry
Horsebridge float
Miss Sturry passes along. Hmm; what had the Horsebridge centre come up with, I wonder?
Belly dancers
the Tollgate
Wahey! Belly dancers! Grins all round from the male spectators. Junior Miss Canterbury was definitely flagging by this stage, I think.

KMFM
Miss Faversham
At least there's one local radio station that's prepared to support it's local carnival. Well done to the KMFM Cruisers. Next up; Miss Faversham.....
Miss Teynham
Majorettes
..... closely followed by Miss Teynham. It's good to see that Majorette troupes are still popular. You spin those batons, girls.

Miss Aylesham
Batgirl
The Miss Aylesham contest looked like it was popular, I don't think I've seen such a densely populated carnival queen float. This kind of view restores my faith in humanity somehow. Chauvanist? Me? Nah.
Miss Sheppey
Sea Scouts
Miss Sheppey's tableau. The next marching band was provided by Whitstable Sea Scouts.

Miss Canterbury
Miss Ashford
Miss Canterbury's float was closely followed by..... .....That of Miss Ashford.
More Majorettes
Miss Margate
This Majorette troupe is the Distinctive Twirlers. Unfortunately, I was still sorting my camera out and only just caught their tail-enders. Miss Margate had a very colourful float. Nice job.

Whitstable Players
Prince Charming
Whitstable Players provided a catch-all pantomime float. And here's Prince Charming. Here, isn't that a woman dressed as a man?
Pretty in pink
Miss Herne Bay
Oh my; that's not a woman, is it? Please no. The things people will do to get attention..... Next up; our very own Miss Herne Bay.

Moulin Rouge
Moulin Rouge
The Duke of Cumberland was determined to go all out for a prize. This "Moulin Rouge" tableau got the pub a First. Jo gives it all she's got. You go, girl!
EK Stone-agers
East Kent
The East Kent evidently recognizes the evolutionary level of it's clientele. More East Kent Stone Age customers.

Are we there yet?
balloon girl
These two flagging young ladies managed to cadge a lift off the MacDonalds bus. Despite her tired state, this young lady at least managed a smile. Bless.
Moulin Rouge
Sensibly dressed women behave as only sensibly dressed women do.
