I could never pretend that this site is purely the result of any inherent programming skills. It started because I wanted to learn how web pages worked. I have learned a great deal about source code writing since I started, largely thanks to the people and sites listed here. I'd like to thank everyone on the list for providing invaluable information, insight and encouragement.

  1. Websites:
    • My first "dip into the water" was thanks largely to Joe Barta, whose excellent website tutorial page can be found here. Joe's site comes highly recommended, particularly for beginners, and has stacks of pages you can download. There is also a membership scheme which give you access to much more, including tutorial CD's.

    • Once I was introduced to the marvels of JavaScript, I looked for sites that could provide useful examples. The best I have found so far is The JavaScript Source. This site has hundreds of useful source code examples, all freely available for downloading.

    • The host ISP for this site is me2uweb , who has provided both a good, reliable and cheap connection.

  2. Books & Magazines:
    • My copy of "Teach Yourself HTML 4 In 24 Hours", (by Dick Oliver & published by SAMS) has been used extensively and became dog-eared very quickly. It was Dick that advised putting the e-mail address at the bottom of every page (including this one). There is also a companion website, accessible via the "Links" page in the "General" section.
    • Another well-thumbed book I have is "Teach Yourself Paint Shop Pro 7 In 24 Hours" (Mark Twain), also published by SAMS. Graphics programs are notoriously "user-unfriendly" and this book at least helps a little in getting to grips with the software's features.
    • The last book I got was "Teach Yourself JavaScript In 24 Hours" by Michael Moncur (SAMS again). For the complete novice, the "24 hour" books are very easy to follow. You won't become a professional programmer just from these but you will get a solid grounding. However, it's taking me a lot longer to get through this book. It, too, has a companion website (see the "Links" page).
    • In August 2001, Web User magazine featured my site in their "Readers Websites" section. Whilst this has encouraged a number of hits, the magazine itself has proved a very good source of assistance too.

  3. Software:
    • All the source code was written using NoteTab Light, an enhanced text editor written by Eric Fookes. It has lots of HTML features that you simply insert into your code. Of course, you could just as easily do it all on Windows Notepad.
    • Graphics, photos, etc. were loaded, modifed and edited with a combination of:
      • Windows Paintbrush
      • Microsoft Photo Editor
      • Paint Shop Pro from JASC Software.
      • Occasionally-appearing animations are created with JASC's Animation Shop, part of the Paint Shop Pro package.
      • Adobe Photo Shop

    • Once a page has been tested, it is uploaded with CuteFTP, from GlobalScape Software.
    • The embedded linking function within the two maps was created using CuteMAP, also from GlobalScape.

  4. Finally, four personal "Thank you" inclusions.....
