Canterbury Road

This series of photos continues on from the Borstall Hill set, taking us from Joy Lane as far as the Belmont Road railway bridge. Again, there aren't a huge number of significant buildings but it's just to give people a taste or reminder of the place.

Granary House
Two Brewers
As a lad, I used to deliver papers to Granary House, in the days when it was a series of properties. There was the main house plus a couple of apartments round the back. Nowadays however, Granary House is a privately-run old people's home. Fantastic property in beautiful grounds. Next up is the Two Brewers, our first pub, opposite Forge Lane. Expect a few more of these.....

Forge Lane
Spices Restaurant - picture being updated
This row of terraced houses, on the corner of Canterbury Road and Forge Lane are built on the site of what was once the Jet filling station. They were built in the early 80's. Former residents may recognize this as the Noahs Ark pub. Not any more; it's now "Spices", an Indian restaurant.

Mariners Court
Giovanni's Restaurant
In an effort to build properties on every available square inch in town, this development is Mariners Court, behind the Whitstable Framing shop. This is Giovanni's, Whitstable's premier Italian restaurant. Owned and run by the Ferrari family.

Seven Seas
All Days
For those of you with slightly simpler tastes, there is always the Seven Seas chip shop, now doubled in size to include it's own restaurant. Another change from my youth. I used to work at a Texaco garage, Bridge service station, here in Canterbury Road. The garage has long gone and is now an All Days local supermarket.

Weatherboard cottages
The old Railway Inn
Opposite All Days are these old weatherboarded cottages, typical of the older properties in town and one of the reasons for it's popularity, especially with Londoners. Another former pub. This was once the Railway Inn but is now a very large private house, on the corner of Canterbury Road and Belmont Street.
The railway bridge
The Whistlestop café
This is as far as we go for this section of Canterbury Road. We're now at the Belmont Road railway bridge. The door underneath used to lead to the Labour club but that has now moved to what was the Golden Lion in Belmont Street. Today, it is "The Whistlestop" café. This opened in the early part of 2004 and is full of railway memorabilia. I've yet to visit it but I'll address that next time Cheryl comes to town.

Details of the railway company motifs on the side of the bridge. They are, from left to right, the Canterbury & Whitstable line, the London, Chatham & Dover line and the South Eastern Railway line. All now sadly gone, to be replaced with Connex Southeastern. Until the end of the year, that is, when Connex loses it's franchise, due to what the Strategic Rail Authority referred to as gross mismanagement.
