| Home - Whitstable - Street Life |
Finally (now the summer's over), I've got round to reinstating the pictures I took when I made my cycle trip round the country lanes near Whitstable. |
| I was asked some time ago about cycle routes. There are a number of official, marked-out routes in the area and charts are available from the tourist information offices in Herne Bay, Whitstable and Canterbury. Each pack contains five or six routes, some short, some very long, taking in a number ofr points of interest along the way. I've cycled on most of those offered in the leaflets but there is another circular route I use regularly, starting from Tankerton. If you bring your bike on the back of a car, the coach/car park in Tankerton Road provides the start point for this route. At the time of writing, it will cost between 60p to park all day in the week and £1 on Saturdays for 4 hours. I think.. |

| From the car park, go along Pier Avenue, away from the seafront. This is the junction at Northwood Road, with Whitstable & Tankerton Cottage hospital on the corner. | Pier Avenue ends at the junction with Bennells Avenue. Continue on the main road towards the railway bridge and traffic lights. |

| Over the bridge into Ham Shades Lane to the end, where it meets Church Street. Turn left into Church Street. | Church Street crosses the old Thanet Way but stay on the cycle path, turning right towards Whitstable. |

| Continue along the old Thanet Way, up to the railway bridge, a remnant of the Crab & Winkle line. | Down the other side and down, towards the Tesco roundabout. |

| Cross Millstrood Road & continue to Golden Hill. Take care crossing here as although the new Thanet Way has taken most of the through traffic, it is still busy. | Once over the road, just follow the hill up..... |

| ..... and down towards the new Thanet Way. | From the bridge, this is the view looking towards Herne Bay..... |

| ......and the view looking towards Whitstable/London. Exciting, isn't it? | Having crossed the bridge, we are finally into the countryside. |
